ABSTRACT

A 56-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with persistent dry cough and infiltrative shadows in a chest X-ray. Since 1 month ago, she started to take New Eye Return®, a kind of natural medicine. Two weeks later, she developed a dry cough. Chest radiograph images showed bilateral infiltrative shadows in the lower lung field. Chest computed tomography revealed diffuse consolidation shadows predominantly in the bilateral lower lung fields. Analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) disclosed an increased proportion of lymphocytes and a decreased ratio of CD4/CD8. The histological examination using transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) specimens revealed polypoid granulation tissue in the terminal air spaces. These findings were consistent with organized pneumonia pattern. Shortly after she had quit taking the natural medicine, her conditions recovered, and the air space consolidation of the chest X-ray reduced. Based on the clinical course and these findings, we diagnosed her as having drug-induced pneumonitis resulting from New Eye Return®. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of pneumonitis induced by New Eye Return®.
