ABSTRACT

Although current available vasodilative drugs, including prostacyclin analogues, endothelin receptor antagonists (ERAs), and phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), can play a beneficial role in controlling the survival of Japanese patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, these drugs are supposed to be noncurative. Therefore new drugs that can provide sustained benefits in survival more than currently available vasodilative drugs are desirable. Depending on the concept of developing new drugs, an understanding of the etiology of this disease in time-dependent fashion should be essential. This article reviews the current pathobiological features of the disease.
