ABSTRACT

Because various genetic predisposition and environmental factors have been involved in the pathogeneses in chronic diseases, the development of appropriate animal models is critical to understand their mechanisms. Although various animal models have been developed to reproduce and analyze human respiratory diseases, ideal models have not been established. Moreover, the methodology to analyze these models is limited. Novel technologies, however, such as MRI and micro-CT, to assess the lung function and morphology in small animals have recently been developed. Here we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) animal models as well as novel imaging technology.
