ABSTRACT

From April 2012, we conducted a COPD examination, which was a combination of the International Primary Care Airways Guidelines (IPAG) questionnaire and spirometry, as part of the general medical examinations offered by the Ogaki city government. From April 2012 to March 2013, a total of 7,547 individuals were examined. Most individuals examined were aged 60 years and above, and the number of women examined exceeded the number of men. IPAG abnormality (score≥17) was detected for 70.1% of the examinees. More than 90% of patients aged 65 years and above tested positive regardless of their smoking history. Spirometry was performed as a second examination for 712 individuals, and 137 were diagnosed with COPD (stage I: 66, stage II: 55, and stage III: 16). This examination system enabled us to find some COPD patients from general population at low cost (total cost was 300,000 yen, or slightly less than USD 3,000). Therefore the examination system could be concluded cost-effective.
