ABSTRACT

A 47-year-old woman had undergone standard antibiotic therapy for a nontuberculous mycobacterial infection since 2014. We performed a bronchoscopic examination because of the deterioration of her lung lesions. Mycobacterium fortuitum was isolated and identified in bronchial lavage fluid. We subsequently administered a multidrug chemotherapy, which included imipenem/cilastatin, amikacin, minocycline, levofloxacin, and clarithromycin, for 2 months based on the results of drug susceptibility test results. This chemotherapy was effective. The patient exhibited no side effects to require either a temporary or final cessation of treatment. This case report demonstrates that multidrug therapy based on the results of drug susceptibility testing is effective for nontuberculous mycobacterial infection caused by M. fortuitum.
