ABSTRACT

In Japan, only a few studies have been conducted on talc pleurodesis. We evaluated the efficacy, safety, and risk factors for treatment failure of talc pleurodesis in 22 patients who underwent talc pleurodesis at our hospital from January 2014. Of the 22 patients, treatment was effective in 10 patients (45%). Fourteen (64%) developed adverse events, but serious adverse events were not observed. Efficacy was significantly lower in the group with poor performance status (PS) and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels of ≥1.0 mg/dL (p=0.002 and p=0.020, respectively). PS and serum CRP are indicated as risk factors for talc pleurodesis failure.
