Objective: We analyzed the long-term outcome in 299 patients who underwent lung resection for primary lung cancer to evaluate the cause of death and characteristics of the patients who survived 10 years or more. Study Design: Retrospective study. Results: One hundred thirty patients (44%) survived 5 years or more. The outcome was as follows: still alive, 89; death due to cancer reccurence, 14; death due to other organ cancers (excluding the primary lung cancer), 13; death due to non-cancerous diseases, 9; unknown, 4; and death due to accident, 1. The 24 patients (22%) who survived 10 years included pathological Stage IIIA or IIIB cases, 2 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (T2-3N2M0) and one with adenocarcinoma (T4, intrapulmonary metastasis). Conclusion: The 5-year and 10-year actual survival rate of our patients were 44% and 22%, respectively. Since the patients who survived 5 years or more died of other organ cancers more than from non-cancerous diseases, periodic examinations for other organ cancers is necessary.
