Purpose: The purpose of this study was to clarify the role of nurses in offering informed consent to clinical trials of new chemotherapy for advanced lung cancer. Methods: 1) Initially the nurses interviewed a total of 30 patients who were candidates for a clinical trial after being informed of new chemotherapy for lung cancer, using a questionnaire. 2) After confirming each patient's uncertainty about their own disease and the procedures being performed from the first questionnaire, the nurses then asked the doctors to re-inform each patient to aid in better understanding their own situation, using written information, such as pamphlets. 3) Patients were given seven days to process information before the second questionnaire was given. An analysis of the change in patients'certainty requiring the information was then made. Results: The number of the patients who will understand the information well increased in the second questionnaire. Of the 30 patients, 26 (86.7%) answered that the assistance of the nurse was helpful in understanding the information. Conclusion: The results showed the role of the nurse was the best served in collecting individual information from the patients, and educating them, encouraging the relationship of doctors and patients.
