Mass Screening of Lung Cancer by Computed Tomography in a Local Hospital

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of CT screeninng for lung cancer Patients and Methods: From April 1, 1996 to February 25, 2000 1354 subjects (1335 men, 19 women) underwent lung cancer screening at our hospital. No subjects had any symptoms or a past history of malignancies, and most subjects were members of the Japanese Self Defense Force aged between 22 and 66 years. The lung cancer screening consisted of a questionnaire, sputum cytology for those with cigarette index (cigarette/day×years smoking) over 600, chest radiography and spiral computed tomography (CT). All patients had previously undergone annual radiography. We compared the detection rate of CT screening with that of chest radiography alone. Results and Methods: Of the 1354 subjects screened, 5 subjects had lung cancer, of which 3 were well differentiated adenocarcinoma, 1 was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma, and 1 was atypical adenomatous hyperplasia. The subject with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma had not previously been diagnosed. Chest radiography did not reveal lung cancer in any subject. Conclusion: Using CT screening we were able to detect 5 patients with lung cancer. All cases except for one were early stage lung cancer, and we suggest that CT screening is a useful method of screening for lung cancer.
