FDG-PET Cancer Screening: Is It Useful for Lung Cancer?

Takashi Terauchi1
1Diagnostic Division, Research Center for Cancer Prevention and Screening, National Cancer Center, Japan

FDG-PET has been looked forward to as a new method for cancer screening. Many PET cancer screening institutions have opened in the last several years in Japan and a good cancer detection rate (about 1%) has been reported. However, clinical evidence of PET for cancer screening has not yet been obtained and it is necessary to obtain this to clarify the role of PET in cancer screening. As for lung cancer screening, CT can detect lung cancers (especially peripheral adenocarcinoma) more easily than PET. It is important to review whether PET can add more useful information to the diagnosis obtained by screening CT.
