Since September 1993, a joint team from the National Cancer Center Hospital, National Cancer Center Hospital East Japan, and Anti-Lung Cancer Association has been performing lung cancer CT screening. Until now, this method has been applied to about 13000 people and its effectiveness is being shown. From these experimental results, it is expected that the screening method leads the accurate detection of small cancers at early stage of the cancer growth. As a result, the research field of lung cancer CT screening has been getting active in Japan, the U.S.A. and Europe as well. Practically, the CT screening needs to develop a digital diagnosis environment to handle a large amount of 3D images. We have been developing a CAD system for lung cancer based on 3D CT images. We describe the lung cancer CAD system and demonstrate the useful results obtained in ongoing clinical trial of this system. The CAD system has two functions of detection and classification of lung cancer candidates. Our detection system was developed in 1996, and, since July 1997, a clinical trial has been executed for about 7000 persons at National Cancer Center Hospital and National Cancer Center Hospital East. We report that a CAD system using 3D CT images is needed to increase the diagnostic accuracy of lung cancer at early stages.
