Background. A carcinoid arising from a mature cystic teratoma of the mediastinum is rare. Case. A 38-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of an abnormal shadow on a chest radiograph. Chest CT scan and MRI showed a well-defined mass with calcification and heterogeneous components in the right anterior mediastinum. Video-assisted thoracic surgery was performed to resect the tumor, which was suspected to be a mediastinal teratoma. The histopathological diagnosis was a carcinoid arising from a mature cystic teratoma of the mediastinum. Conclusion. We report a rare case of a carcinoid arising from a mature cystic teratoma of the mediastinum.
