Incidence and Mortality of Lung Cancer

Kumiko Saika1

The incidence of lung cancer in 1985-2007 based on four population-based cancer registries (Miyagi, Yamagata, Fukui and Nagasaki) and the mortality rate in 1958-2012 according to Vital Statistics are currently increasing. However, these increases are caused by the aging of the population. For males, the age-standardized incidence neither increased nor decreased from the late 1990's onward, whereas the mortality rate decreased. For females, the age-standardized incidence has been gradually increasing, while the mortality rate has remained stable, since the late 1980's onward. According to a future prediction of the lung cancer burden through the year 2029, both the incidence and death rate are expected to increase, with the increase in the population of older individuals; however, the rise in the age-standardized rates is expected to stop around 2015.
