Background. Surgery for early-stage lung cancer in young patients, particularly those < 20 years old, is extremely uncommon. Case. A 17-year-old female was referred to our hospital due to right back pain. No significant laboratory findings, including tumor markers, were identified. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a ground-glass opacity (GGO) with a diameter of 8 mm in the right pulmonary apex. Follow-up CT examinations performed three and five months later persistently showed the same GGO. Video-assisted partial resection of the right lung was performed. The pathological diagnosis was adenocarcinoma in situ. Conclusion. A possible diagnosis of lung cancer should be considered upon the detection of a GGO in a CT scan, even in patients < 20 years old.
