Abstract |
Diagnostic Stewardship (DS) is an important initiative that should be implemented in conjunction with the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) as diagnostic support. It includes the pre-test and post-test processes, and its content should be understood not only by laboratory technologists but also by all healthcare professionals, including physicians and nurses. For appropriate pre-test process, indication of microbial test, procedure of sample collection, and transportation of sample to laboratory should be considered. Repeated education for healthcare staffs is required to achieve these steps. It is also important for laboratories and ICT/AST to be aware that underutilization or inappropriate use of test data can have negative effects on patients, and it is important to work together to review hospital rules and implement DS practices suitable for their respective facilities. In addition, in case of outsource microbiological testing, attention should be also paid to the pre- and post-test processes. By working on DS practices at their own facilities with continuous education to healthcare workers, even from a small step, best practices could be established in collaboration with ICT/AST. |
