Abstract Ophthalmic infections are classified as conjunctivitis, keratitis, lacrimal duct infection, infectious uveitis, and endophthalmitis, each of which having a different causative microorganism. Smears examination, culture isolation, and genetic testing are necessary to make a definitive diagnosis. A certain quantity of bacteria is required for Gram staining and other smear tests. In many cases, if the quantity of bacteria is small, the smear specimen cannot be used to confirm the diagnosis. Therefore, customizing culture media and conditions for pathogen detection is important. In infectious uveitis and endophthalmitis, multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction is used to detect the causative microorganisms.
