| Abstract |
In May 2022, the Japan government enacted the Economic Security Promotion Act, designating ampicillin-sulbactam, tazobactam-piperacillin, cefazolin, and cefmetazole, as "Antibacterial Pharmaceuticals," a category of critical materials. We Meiji Seika Pharma Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Fuji Film Toyama Chemical Co., Ltd. and Otsuka Chemical Co., Ltd., has been recognized as a supply security provider and is advancing efforts to establish a domestic manufacturing system for four penicillin active pharmaceutical ingredients. Although our company had previously produced penicillin domestically, production was discontinued in 1994 due to competitive pressure from cheaper overseas products. However, we have been working towards resuming penicillin production with various support measures. This review outlines our initiatives to restart production, the challenges faced, and future prospects. |
