Abstract Living ciliated protozoa were detected from the urine of a 83-year-old male patient with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). He had been treated with steroids and had fallen into immunosuppressed condition. The ciliate protozoa were first detected in August 1999, and successively observed 16 times until March 2001, although two times despite of vesicoclysis performed on November 21 and December 19, 2000. Based on morphological examination, these protozoa were identified as Colpoda steini Maupas,1883 which is commonly detected from pond and moist soil. Detection of the protozoa for fairly long time suggests that these protozoa had multiplied in the urinary bladder.
Keywords Colpoda steini, compromised host, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, prednisolone
