Abstract |
In recent years, risk, crisis and safety managements of infectious diseases have been required in any hospitals because of drastic changes around infectious diseases. As we have few departments of infectious diseases in most Japanese hospitals, the key role of clinical microbiology laboratories has increased more. However, according to the revised medical law in Japan on 2001, outsourcing clinical laboratories have increased primarily on the basis of financial considerations, and many onsite microbiological laboratories have been discontinued. These results occurred serious problems for risk and safety managements of infectious diseases in some regions and the nation. After introducing diagnosis procedure combination/prospective payment system (DPC/PPS; like DRG/PPS; diagnosis related group/prospective payment system in the United States), microbiological laboratories should consolidate total infectious disease services including consultation, infection control, or antibiotic restriction policy in addition to conventional clinical microbiological testing services. Under these situations, future directions of clinical microbiological laboratories in Japan will be discussed. |
