Abstract CHROMagar O26·O157 (SEL) is a new chromogenic medium for presumptive identification of clinically important Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157, O26, and O111. We evaluated the use of this chromogenic medium, Cefixime tellurite-Sorbitol MacConkey agar (CT-SMAC), CT-Rhamnose MacConkey agar (CT-RMAC), and CT-Sorbose MacConkey agar (CT-SBMAC) with 144 EHEC isolates. Over 97% of isolates of EHEC O157, O26, and O111 were correctly identified on the basis of colony morphology and color on CHROMagar O26·O157 (SEL). The detection limits of low numbers of EHEC O157, O26, and O111 in fecal specimens by the CHROMagar O26·O157 (SEL) were 103 CFU/g for all and not significantly different from the recovery on CT-SMAC, CT-RMAC, and CT-SBMAC. The false positive ratios of presumptively identified as EHEC O157, O26, and O111 on the basis of the color of colonies on CHROMagar O26·O157 (SEL) were 5.6% (O157), 2.8% (O26), 6.8% (O111), and 15.2% (main three serotype of EHEC), respectively. No enterohemolysis strains were obtained from false positive colonies. Our proposed EHEC screening system for the fecal specimens may be useful as a routine tool.
