Abstract |
We report a rare case of traveler's diarrhea caused by Shigella boydii in Japan. The patient is a 17-year-old male. He had traveled to India and was ademitted to our hospital due to diarrhea, fever and abdomonal pain two days after he came home. The biochemical profile of the isolate produced by a Vitek2 compact identification system from his stool was of Shigella group. But the organism did not react with any of the established Shigella serovars' antisera. The organism was further assessed and identified as new S. byidii serovar SM00-27 eventually at Tokyo metropolitan institute of public health. This strain was resistant to tetracycloine, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim and nalidixic acid. And the strain was low level resistance to fluoroquinolone. |
