Abstract Optimizing the physician-laboratory communication is critical to accurately diagnose an infectious process. Improvement is needed in physician utilization of the microbiology laboratory. We reviewed "A Guide to Utilization of the Microbiology Laboratory for Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases: 2013 Recommendations by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM)" and discuss how this could be applied to improve patient care in Japan.
