Abstract To comprehend current understanding regarding biosafety among health personnel in Japan, we conducted a survey using questionnaires on the biosafety of laboratory personnel in January 2012. We obtained data from 415 participants at the 23rd annual meeting of the Japanese Society for Clinical Microbiology. Affiliation of respondents included medical institutes (n=280), health care-associated companies (n=60), clinical testing centers (n=49), and educational institutes (n=26). The occupational categories were medical technologists (n=321), staffs of the companies (n=56), medical doctors (n=18), and others (n=20). On questionnaire regarding standard precaution, 321 (78.3%) of 410 respondents answered correct. The different answer rates were 81.7% of medical institutes, 81.6% of clinical testing centers, and 63.2% of the companies. On questionnaire of equipping gloves and mask when treating clinical specimens, 221 (54.3%) of 407 answered correct. The different rates were 52.7% (medical institutes), 75.5% (the testing centers), and 48.2% (the companies). On questionnaire concerning disaster countermeasures (e.g., anti-tip for machines and equipments), 82 (21.6%) of 297 prepared all of the measures. The different rates were 15.3% (medical institutes), 31.1% (the testing centers), and 40.9% (the companies). We asked staffs regarding routine use of personal protective equipment when collecting blood in medical institutes. Percentages of usage of gloves, mask, and syringe having a safety device were 87.9% (190/216), 80.5% (173/215), and 63.7% (132/207), respectively. These observations suggest necessity of different re-preparations concerning biosafety system including materials and personnel in different institutes.
