Abstract |
The performance of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry systems were evaluated in the identification of streptococci. A total of 135 clinical isolates were analyzed using a Bruker MALDI Biotyper system. This system correctly identified 100% (135/135) of Streptococcus isolates to the genus-level and 81.5% (110/135) to the species-level for two sample preparation methods (on-plate formic acid preparation and ethanol-formic acid extraction). Several bacterial species could not be identified to the species-level by this system because of few number of reference spectra in current reference library. It is necessary to improve reference library in MALDI Biotyper for the more accurate identification of clinically significant Streptococcus strains. |
