Abstract |
We report a case of sepsis caused by Neisseria meningitides involving an isolate belonging to the ST-184 genotype, which is uncommon in Japan. The patient was a 73-year-old male and had undergone surgery for bladder cancer 15 years ago. He was being treated with medications for diabetes and high blood pressure. He was brought to the emergency outpatient department with complaints of chills and fever, which had started in the early morning, and was hospitalized for a complete physical examination. The next day, N. meningitides was detected in a blood culture. Furthermore, serological and genotypic analyses performed at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases identified the N. meningitides isolate as belonging to serogroup W-135 and genotype ST-184. This is the first time this isolate has been detected in Japan. |
