Abstract |
We report the case of a 38 year old woman with an intra abdominal infection of Mycoplasma hominis after caesarean section. Six days after the caesarean section was performed, a Computed Tomography scan examined uterus and identified abscess formation. As a result, Laparotomy drainage was performed. In an ascitic specimen, the growth of the small colony in pinpoint form was detected on day 3 after the culture. Microscopic examination of a Gram stain of the colony showed granular particles, however, no bacteria was detected. The strain was identified as M. hominis by genetic analysis. Although two sets of blood cultures obtained three days after the cesarean section were confirmed negative after cultured in the Bactec FX for seven days, growth of M. hominis was confirmed from all two sets when a subculture was performed.
When M. hominis infection is suspected during a clinical examination, it is necessary to advise a clinician a proper method of culturing. Moreover, a clinical technologist must extend time for each of cultures and perform the subculture of the bottle contents liquid regardless of the Bactec FX results. |
