Abstract |
Epidemiological studies have suggested that diabetes is a risk factor for dementia. However, the mechanism by which diabetes is a risk factor has not been fully understood. It seems that diabetes may not simply exacerbate vascular dementia or Alzheimer's disease (AD). The results of studies using AD model mice with diabetes and the autopsy brain studies suggest that diabetes could increase neurodegeneration in AD. Specifically, AD model mice with diabetes showed changes in behavior, accompanying the changes in gene expression levels in the brain. Currently, we are analyzing the involvement of the molecules in the pathogenesis in vivo and in vitro. We have also found that AD could exacerbate diabetic phenotypes as well as diabetes exacerbates neurodegeneration in AD. In the future, we would like to contribute to the establishment of the next generation AD treatment based on the elucidation of key molecules that diabetes exacerbates dementia, in addition to preemptive medicine targeting β amyloid. |
