Abstract |
Kinesthetic reading difficulty and related deficits were focused on as a communication disorder. Patient 1 with asymmetric Bálint's syndrome and multimodal agnosia exhibited bilateral associative tactile agnosia, bilateral agraphesthesia, and unavailable kinesthetic reading following hemorrhage in the parieto-occipital area. Patient 2 with alexia with agraphia with letter-by-letter reading showed kinesthetic reading difficulty and a visual-tactile coordination disorder because of hemorrhage in the left lateral occipital gyri. Both lesions included the lateral occipital visual-tactile area (LOtv) that was activated in both visual and tactile naming (Amedi et al., Cerebral Cortex, 2002). Bilateral associative tactile agnosia, bilateral agraphesthesia, kinesthetic reading difficulty, and a visual-tactile coordination disorder can be generally labeled as tactually-related cognitive impairments, which occur when access to the LOtv is interrupted or the LOtv itself is damaged. |
