Abstract Recent studies in cognitive neuroscience have focused on the neural mechanisms underlying "future-oriented cognition". This concept includes "prospective memory", which is the function of remembering intended actions with appropriate timing, "future thinking", which is the function of thinking about episodic future events, and "mind wandering", which is closely related to both. This paper reviews related results by focusing on the functional role of Brodmann's area 10 (BA10). The significance of adopting multiple approaches is also discussed, including functional brain imaging (MRI and EEG), psychiatric studies, and psychophysiological studies.
Keywords Brodmann area 10, prospective memory, future thinking, interoception, depression
