Abstract |
I have described the issues that need to be considered when assessing the cognitive impairments that underlie neuropsychological symptoms. Using various neuropsychological tests with controlled stimuli, we aim to quantify the cognitive abilities that cannot be directly observed and to clarify the characteristics of the symptoms. The patient's cooperation is necessary to carry out the tests. It is also important to consider factors that may affect best performance, such as the patient's attitude to the test, visual and auditory senses, level of understanding of instructions, and attention to the test. The examiner needs to be fully aware of the cognitive processing that each test is designed to assess and always assess it with this in mind. Sometimes it is necessary to find ways to bring out the maximum ability of the patient. When relating the test results to the patient's main complaint, it is necessary to interpret the results in the context of the patient's individual factors rather than blindly interpreting the numbers. |
