Abstract |
The concept of frontotemporal lobar degeneration or frontotemporal dementia has been through numerous changes. The current classification has been developed through merging the concept of degenerative diseases presenting with focal brain atrophy with the concept of diseases presenting with progressive aphasia. However, this classification fails to address left-right lateralization of the temporal lobe. Reports of right temporal lobe atrophy, characterized by a lower frequency of loss of semantic memory of words, higher frequency of prosopagnosia and personality / behavioral changes, had increased since 1990s. Although several concepts have been proposed in recent years, there is no conclusive one. The key of debate is whether we should understand neurodegenerative diseases as an "entity" or a "spectrum," and further research is required. |
