Abstract This paper outlines the evolution of perspectives on language, concepts of language function, cognitive neuropsychology and language network models, and unresolved issues regarding language algorithms. The understanding of language mechanisms has evolved from early debates between localization theory and holism, inductive approaches based on empirical evidence versus deductive approaches based on theory and hypothesis, to conflicts between innateness and acquisition, dual-route hypothesis, and network models. The development of neuroimaging has supported perspectives on functional localization and brain networks, while AI evolution has supported the learnability of language. However, issues such as language function variability such as dissociation between intentionality and automaticity, category and modality specificity remain to be resolved.
Keywords language algorithms, localization of laguage, dual-stream model, dissociation between intentionality and automaticity, category specificity and modality specificity
