| Abstract |
The development of neuropsychology in Japan has been shaped by the collaborative efforts of multiple professions, as reflected in the diverse backgrounds of those who passed the first Clinical Neuropsychologist Qualification Examination in 2022. By contrast, in the United States, becoming a clinical neuropsychologist requires completing a doctoral degree in clinical psychology or related fields, followed by national certification as a psychologist or clinical psychologist. Candidates must then undertake postdoctoral training in clinical neuropsychology at hospitals or specialized institutions. Given that the responsibilities of a clinical neuropsychologist extend beyond the assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions to include diagnosing brain dysfunction, designing effective treatment strategies, and providing psychological care, clinical neuropsychologists in Japan may need to further strengthen their expertise in areas of clinical psychology such as physiological psychology and behavioral psychology. |
