Abstract |
In brain-machine interfaces (BMIs), motor-output BMIs are artificial systems controlling external devices or body muscles with signals from neural activities of working brains. When such a BMI is working, the brain is inevitably changing its own functions and structures to operate external devices more efficiently. Consequently, basic researches of BMI could not avoid from being ones of neural plasticity and are must to develop neuro-rehabilitation in addition to realizing high-performance BMIs. This paper introduces examples of pioneering and recent researches showing neuronal plastic changes caused by BMIs, one is with rat motor cortices and the other is with rat hippocampus regions and a neuronal operant task. |
