Abstract Coherent ensembles of neuronal activity are now being promoted as possible mechanisms for adaptation to the dynamically varying and undefined situations encountered in daily life. Human brain imaging studies are able to demonstrate the neuronal ensemble involved in EEG phase synchronization. In this review paper, I introduce the functional importance of the neuronal ensemble and its relationship to disability. I also review our studies that have used simultaneous EEG and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to identify the cortical networks involved in phase synchronizations observed in scalp EEG recordings.
