Abstract |
Objective: To examine the validity of the Everyday Memory Task for Memory Clinic (EMT-MC), a semi-structured interview with the scoring system for patients who present to memory clinic. Methods: We recruited 83 patients with Alzheimer's disease who visit the memory clinic of Niigata Rehabilitation Hospital. All the patients consecutively underwent the following 3 assessments on the first day, 3 to 5 weeks after and 4 to 6 weeks after: (1) the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), (2) a one-day assessment which includes magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography and neuropsychological investigation with the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS) and (3) an interview with EMT-MC. The EMT-MC ask each patient how long ago he/she visit the hospital for the first time, how many times he/she visited the hospital since the first time, and what examinations and tests he/she underwent at the last visit. The responses of each patient and the rating system of the EMT-MC gave a score of everyday memory. We assessed the correlations between the EMT-MC score and the demographic, clinical and cognitive variables. Results: The EMT-MC score significantly correlated with the MMSE score, the total score and the Word Recall score of the ADAS, and the rating of overall severity and the rating of memory impairment in the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR). Conclusion: The results showed that the EMT-MC has a sufficient validity in evaluating everyday memory impairment of AD patients. The methodology of the EMT-MC provides a brief task of everyday memory for each memory clinic. |
