Abstract This study examined the relationship of language impairments, cognitive impairments except language ability, and communication activity limitations of aphasic patients, by using the score of the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB), the Communicative Abilities of Daily Living (CADL) short form, the CADL family questionnaire, and the data of environmental manipulation by caregivers. The results suggested following findings. As the score of the CADL short form indicated higher correlation with CQ of the WAB than AQ, it is implied that communication activity limitations influenced not only language impairments but also cognitive impairments except language ability. Especially, remaining functions of praxis were strongly related to communication activity limitations. The discriminate analysis was used to analyze the factors of dissociation between language impairments and communication activity limitations. The scores of the WAB, the CADL short form and the CADL family questionnaire were used as independent variables. As a result, it was possible to divide the participants into two groups by the factors of months of post-onset, type of aphasia, compensatory strategies, and environmental manipulation. Therefore, it is suggested that there are necessities of intervention for environmental factors, for instances, compensatory strategies used by patients and environmental manipulation given by caregivers.
