Abstract Objective: To investigate patients with dementia who showed dissociation between the scores of the Everyday Memory Task for Memory Clinic (EMT-MC) and the immediate recall task of 10 words in the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS), a standard task for recent memory. Subjects: 95 patients with Alzheimer's disease or dementia with Lewy bodies who underwent both the EMT-MC and the ADAS in a memory clinic. Their mean age at the first visit was 79.6±6.3 years and their mean MMSE score was 18.1±4.3. Methods: A regression analysis with the score of the word recall task in the ADAS as the independent variable and the score of the EMT-MC as the dependent variable estimated the 80% confidence interval of the EMT-MC score for each patient. We defined the patients whose EMT-MC scores were higher than the upper limit of the 80% confidence interval as the high EMT-MC group (n=13). We compared demographic, clinical and cognitive characteristics between the high EMT-MC and the other groups with analyses of variance and χ2 tests, as appropriate. Results: The patients of the high EMT-MC group showed significantly better scores in the Construction and the Orientation tasks in the ADAS than did the other patients. Conclusions: In patients who have better everyday memory when compared to the performance in a standard task for recent memory, relatively preserved function of visual cognition and orientation may support their everyday memory.
