Abstract |
The extent of the language area varies from patient to patient. Exact location of the language area should be determined in each patient when the brain lesion is close to the language areas. Cortical mapping by awake craniotomy has become frequently used worldwide as part of the treatment for brain lesions located near language areas. However, no systematic guidelines have been established for this method. The Japan Awake Surgery Conference organized a guidelines committee in 2006 to establish the guidelines, which are now completed. Members specializing in the fields of neurosurgery, neurology, and anesthesiology took part in discussion, a systematic review and creating guidelines. Because of the absence of randomized control trials of awake craniotomy, the committee used "de facto standards" to create the guidelines. This paper is a Japanese version of a part of the guidelines, "language assessment during awake craniotomy". We hope that the guidelines will improve the safety of awake craniotomies and promote the development of the neuroscience on cognitive functions. |
