Abstract |
Tools for imaging diagnosis of higher brain function disorders, in particular, MRI and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), were reviewed. In MRI, functional MRI, perfusion-weighted images, diffusion tensor images with tractography have been actually used, in addition to the conventional T1- and T2-weighted images, fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images, and diffusion-weighted images. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM), which assesses brain volume quantitatively, is incorporated in the world standard image analysis software, Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM), and is available in VSRAD, a diagnostic support software for Alzheimer's disease. 123I-IMP and 99mTc-ECD are mainly used for SPECT as labelling ligands for cerebral blood flow. Imaging softwares, 3D-SSP for IMP and e-ZIS for ECD, can display distribution of regional cerebral blood flow. The author revealed how these MRI and SPECT images are utilized in four patients with various higher brain function disorders. |
