Abstract |
This is a survey of symptoms coming from deranged higher cognitive functions caused by epileptic activities, except for impairment of language and memory. Specifically, forced thinking, time acceleration, illusion of familiarity, feeling of somebody being near-by, mental diplopia, body scheme derangements, alien hand syndrome, out-of-body experience, double, paliacousia, hemispatial neglect, polyopsia, palinopia, visual allesthesia, facial metamorphopsia are discussed. When it coms to deranged higher cognitive functions induced by epileptic activities, distinction between ictal (i.e. aura or simple partial seizure) and postictal origin is of the utmost importance. While productive symptoms on the basis of postictal phenomenon are likely to be regarded as a release phenomenon proposed originally by John Hughlings Jackson, direct activation of the locus in the question may exist ictally. |
