Abstract In this paper, mechanism of language is discussed through language symptoms following brain damage in terms of three points of view: 1. the hierarchy of the language process, 2. the characteristic of the brain function, 3. embodiment of language. Regarding the first point of view, the hierarchical process of the language and the specific elementary language symptoms due to the impairment of each language process level and the relevant localization of the lesions are summarized. Second, how the characteristics of the brain affect the language system and the language symptoms are adduced. Finally, a new interpretation is construed as to the category specificity and the modality specificity of language impairment taking account of the importance of the sensory information for language.
