Abstract |
Objective: To evaluate the first-year change rate of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Subjects: 63 patients with AD who were being cared for at home and underwent the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) both at the initial consultation and one year after the initial consultation. Methods: We explored factors that affected the first-year change rate of the NPI total score by means of single regression analysis with each item of patient and disease characteristics and therapeutic interventions as an independent variable.
Results: The results indicated that patients with higher NPI total scores at the initial consultation had lower change rates and that patients who scored on the item of anxiety at the initial consultation had lower change rates. Conclusion: The results suggested that AD patients with high NPI total scores at the initial consultation may have secondary exacerbation of BPSD attributable to anxiety, which may be improved by improving the corrective attitude of patients' families through family guidance after the initial consultation. |
