| Abstract | Various eating-related problems are commonly observed among people with dementia, and these problems place a huge burden on the caregivers. Our factor analysis research revealed that various eating problems can be categorized into 4 factor such as "overeating", "swallowing problems", "decrease in appetite", and "obsession with food". Each factor was associated with different background variables. Profiles of eating abnormalities differ largely between each dementing disorder. For instance, patients with Alzheimer's disease tend to show eating abnormalities related to memory problems. Patients with frontotemporal dementia tend to show eating abnormalities such as overeating, changes in food preferences with the damage of frontal-subcortical circuit. Individuals with dementia with Lewy bodies tend to show eating abnormalities resulting from several factors, not only because of Parkinsonism. We need a comprehensive assessment on the background of eating abnormalities, such as dementia causes, severity of dementia, coexisting diseases, presence of behavioral problems, personal lifestyle, and the sociocultural aspects of each patient. |
