Abstract |
Although broad neural systems are related with human behavior, the orbitofrontal cortex plays a crucial role in behavioral control. Despite intact cognitive functions when assessed by means of standard neuropsychological tests, persons with orbitofrontal cortex damage often shows behavior changes, e.g., impulsive buying, inattention to hygiene, making inappropriate remarks, pathological collecting behavior. They might present with confabulation. Meanwhile, some case reports describe that pre-existence of depression or social anxiety disorder could improve after orbitofrontal cortex damage. Some hypotheses are developed to better understand the contribution of the OFC to behavior, including difficulties in matching mental life and the external world and difficulties in retrieval of emotions which are associated with an imaged behavior. |
