Abstract |
In this article, I reviewed researches about insular cortical functions in the field of neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience from classic to recent theoretical models. Firstly, I focused on the studies that posit insula as a neural substrate for certain mental processes such as viscerosensory, disgust, interoception, subjective feeling of emotion and arousal. Secondly, researches about the subregions of insula and associated mental processes were reviewed. Finally, I introduced a model that suggests insula as a pivotal area for interoceptive predictive coding. Those researches indicate that the brain-body interaction through insular cortex makes "now" and it is an essential process for emotion. |
