Abstract |
We investigated the annual rate of functional decline in 122 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) who underwent the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) at the initial, one-year and two-year visits. We compared the annual rates of change in the CDR Sum of Boxes (CDR-SOB) score between first year and second year by analysis of variance, and examined the effect of anticholinesterase drugs that were started to administrate after the initial visit using a two-way analysis of variance. The annual rate of change for the first year was significantly lower than that for the second-year, and the use of anticholinesterase drugs did not affect the difference. The results suggest that systematic education and intervention to family caregivers may improve patient's functional as well as cognitive impairment due to disuse syndrome, resulting in reducing the rate of functional decline for the first year. |
