Abstract |
Lesions of the secondary somatosensory cortex, situated in inner side of the medial parietal operculum and posterior insular cortex, cause loss of sensation of pain and temperature, and the impairment patterns occasionally differ between these sensations. In other cases, some patients exhibit an absence of the escape responses to pain or of pain unpleasantness although they can perceive pain stimuli. Other patients perceive temperature sensation as pain sensation instead of temperature sensation. Here, we review the anatomical background, case studies, and neuroscientific knowledge related to these impairments. In addition, we present the cases of three patients with different clinical characteristics caused by lesions of the secondary somatosensory cortex. |
