Abstract |
We describe the clinical characteristics of associative tactile agnosia and elucidate the culprit lesion and mechanism of onset in a case of multiple sclerosis with a subcortical lesion in the right parietal lobe. Component sensations were intact and the patient was able to discriminate materials and shapes, but had difficulty naming objects when touching them with the left hand. Because this disorder was not seen with the right hand, and the patient was unable to categorize or explain the use of objects touched with the left hand, we suspected associative tactile agnosia of the left hand. The culprit lesion was centered on the angular gyrus, and we surmised that the disorder was caused by a disconnect between somatosensory information and semantic memory in the temporal lobe. |
