Abstract Catatonia is a psychomotor syndrome presenting with catalepsy, echolalia, echopraxia, stereotypies, stupor, and so on. The first detailed description of catatonia dates back to the 19th century. Since then, catatonia had been classified as a subtype of schizophrenia for over 100 years. However, in recent years, it was separated from schizophrenia. Several reports have revealed that patients not only with schizophrenia but also with various neuropsychiatric disorders such as mood disorders, autism, dementia, and intoxications, and general medical conditions could present with catatonia syndrome. Although it can be lethal, catatonia syndrome is underdiagnosed and its pathological mechanism has not been fully disclosed. In this article, we reviewed studies investing the pathological mechanism of catatonia syndrome and reported a variety of cases with catatonia syndrome.
